Mission Planner Connection COM Port Failure

In Mission Planner, I’m having trouble connecting to the drone, as the COM port option is not coming up in the drop down menu (and using the AUTO mode has not been successful). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Mission Planner, restarting my computer, and replugging in the USB telemetry module.

It seems like the issue is that the device is not registering with any drivers. First, I went into device manager to look for the device - it appears under “other devices” rather than ports, not sure if that’s an issue:

Then, I clicked on the device and noticed it said that the drivers for the device were not installed.

I tried to manually connect the device with the Mission Planner drivers by navigating to the drivers folder of the Mission Planner install, but even when I navigated to that specific folder, I got this message:

I also tried clicking on that Windows Update option, and ended up updating my computer, but the issue was still not resolved.

Additionally, on my end it seems like the driver files were installed successfully, so I’m not sure why it’s not finding them - this is what I see when I open the drivers folder:

Please let me know if you have any troubleshooting tips.

The COM port briefly came up as an option after manually installing the driver in the way the course recommended, but now it is not coming up anymore…not sure what happened, I don’t think I changed anything.

Also, I’m still not seeing the device in my device manager the same way the course shows that it should appear (ie, a port section is still not appearing, and the name of the device doesn’t match):

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

This is a pretty common issue unfortunately on Windows.

I will note, if you are currently blocked by this to run calibrations/etc, you can also connect a micro USB cable from the Pixhawk to your computer, and connect to mission planner that way.

For the telemetry modules, this is 99.999% of the time a Windows driver issue. If you have access to another Windows computer, I would try that one as a quick test- and see if the driver appears on the other windows computer.

Most likely, you will need to manually install the driver.

Here is a link to the driver you’ll need to install:

CP210x_Universal_Windows_Driver (2).zip (280.1 KB)
With your USB device plugged in, open up Device Manager.

Then look under “Other Devices” or “Ports”.

You should see a device corresponding to your USB telemetry. What you’ll need to do is download the driver I shared with you, unzip it. Then right click on your device in Device Manager, and select something that says Update Driver. Then you’ll select the folder (likely in your downloads) with the driver you’ll download and unzip from my google drive. Make sure to select “include all subfolders”. After this, step through the driver update process and at the end, the USB telemetry should now be visible and working under the Ports section of Device Manager.

At this point, the device should now be available on MissionPlanner.
