I will be using the pihawk for real estate photography for my wife, and flying for fun for me. I do not own a windows pc and don’t plan to, but it seems the mission planner and ardupilot are essential, and only available on windows. I understand that they may be essential for autonomous missions, but I am not interested in that, only manual flying. (if there were suitable substitutes available on linux then I might be interested.) I am going to be really sad if the lack of a windows box keeps me from building a very cool drone!
Can I build a pihawk that is just for manual flying?

You can use QGC which is cross platform.

If all you are doing is RE photography, and you don’t need a RPi, I would just get an RTF vehicle with a very good camera.
